When your desk is buried in deadlines, the last thing you need is another administrative task, especially one that falls outside your usual workflow. That’s why we’ve launched three important updates designed to take specific manual tasks off your plate: Service by Mail, “Other” Court Delivery, and new enhancements to eService.
Each update solves a real problem—whether it’s delegating routine mailings, giving you quicker ways to serve documents, or helping you catch issues sooner—so you can move cases forward with less hassle.
Service by Mail: reliable, efficient, and off your to-do list
In California, a Notice and Acknowledgment of Receipt (NAOR) is typically used in civil litigation to serve documents by mail as a substitute for personal service when opposing counsel or other parties are cooperative.
While law firms can handle this internally, our managed service offers:
- Faster processing
- Compliance with CCP 415.30
- Administrative relief
- Centralized tracking and follow-up
Our trained team will print and mail the NAOR with a pre-paid self-addressed stamped envelope, track the delivery, and notify you at key checkpoints. Once the recipient signs and returns the acknowledgement form, our team scans and uploads the document to your One Legal account.
For the service to be effective, the recipient must sign and return the acknowledgement within 20 days (30 days if served outside California). If no signed acknowledgment is received by Day 21, we close the order and suggest next steps, such as personal service.
Service by mail can be used for:
- Summons and Complaint
- Cross-Complaint
- Petitions (e.g., some initial pleadings in family law or probate proceedings)
- Amended Complaints or Pleadings
- Certain Motions or Orders to Show Cause (when initiating service)
If you’ve been managing mail service in-house, Service by Mail with One Legal is a clean handoff you can rely on.
“Other” Court Delivery: for everything that doesn’t fit the norm
Not every court delivery is a courtesy copy. You might need to drop off a binder of exhibits, deliver a check to the court clerk, or submit a hard-copy order for signature. These documents all need to reach the court and must do so on time.
We’ve updated our Court Delivery service to give you more flexibility. Now, you can choose between two streamlined options:
- Courtesy Copy Delivery (same as before)
- Other Court Delivery (for everything else)
“Other” Court Delivery can be used for:
- Filing fee checks
- Exhibit binders
- Evidence packets
- Bench copies for hearings or trials
- Documents for specialty departments or courtrooms
Just submit a standalone Court Delivery order, provide any special instructions, and we’ll handle the rest. Our Fulfillment team will reach out if pricing or logistics need clarification. Otherwise, you’ll get updates and tracking through your One Legal dashboard like any other order.
eService: Now easier to find and track
We’ve made two meaningful updates to eService to improve visibility and reliability.
First, we’ve added a dedicated eService button on your dashboard. This new access point makes it easy to initiate eService as a stand-alone order—no need to navigate through the Service of Process workflow or add it to an eFiling. It’s front and center, and ready when you are.
Second, we’ve introduced a new “undeliverable” status. If an eService fails—due to a mistyped email, full inbox, or other delivery issue—you’ll now be notified both by email and on your order status page. This gives you a clear signal to take corrective action proactively, instead of waiting to find out from the recipient that a notice never landed. These updates aim to make eService a more reliable and transparent option, especially as more firms shift toward digital notice whenever possible.
Built for the gaps
With these new offerings—Service by Mail, “Other” Court Delivery, and stand-alone eService—we’re closing more of the real-world gaps in litigation support logistics. Let us handle the paper, the follow-up, and the footwork—so you can focus on your case.
